BY ZOE ZAG: FEAR OF MEN - Fear of Men, is a four piece lo-fi pop band from Brighton. I had a chance to ask the vocalist, Jessica and Dan, the guitarist about their story. Jessica had been in art school making biographical films and along with that she made abstract soundtracks. Dan came to an exhibition and Fear of Men was born! After talking about looping pedals, they talked about starting more of a pop sounding project. Soon they were asked to play shows and took every chance they got, asking friends to play with them. They just had a 12'' compilation of their music put out on Kanine Records. It is a collection of their singles that were only available in the UK and on limited edition tape pressings released by Sex is Disgusting. In spring, they will be releasing their full album!Fear of Men is full of history. Jessica is constantly reading and using inspiration for her lyrics. She gets immersed in people or ideas and reads everything about it. The overall theme of the album is things that interest her like mortality anxiety and the weight of history. She takes takes suffering and makes it quixotic, like her idea of saying something meaningful when you know you are going to die. With her notebook glued to her side, she writes these ideas down and then uses them for her lyrics. The songs are her personal connection to these ideas and to the world. Historically or from her own world, you are hearing a very intimate piece of music. In Brighton, music and art is flooding the streets. Though this would be an extremely inspiring environment, they practice on Dan's farm away from all of the noise.
